Lakers beat the Raptors
This was a tough win.The Lakers beat the Raptors 115-107 yesterday behind 36 points and 9 boards from Kobe Bryant. Bryant hit a tough jump shot late in the 4th quarter to give the Lakers the lead. Pau Gasol kicked in another monstrous performance with 31 points and 15 rebounds. The Lakers bench only provided 21 points. All 5 Raptors starters scored in double figures led by Joey Graham with 24. Joey Graham?? Yes, Joey Graham who averages less than 8 PPG had a career night with 24 points. Jermaine O'Neal contributed 22 points and 9 blocks.
The Lakers last two games have both been difficult wins since the injury to Andrew Bynum. The Lakers are relying too much on Kobe to pick up the scoring burden with the loss of Bynum. Lamar Odom needs to become more aggressive on the offensive end and increase his rebounding output. The Lakers need Odom to average a double double to help out Kobe and Gasol. L.A.'s bench needs to regain their lost form from just a week ago. The bench was providing a scoring boost and needed energy for the Lakers. Since Odom has moved into the st! arting l ineup the bench has lost a lot of its offensive firepower. The Lakers will need the bench to be productive if they hope to win their next game against the hated Celtics.
Next Game: Thursday night Lakers @ Celtics
This will be a tough one for the Lakers to win without Bynum. L.A. is 4-0 in their last four road games. The Celtics are on a 12 game winning streak and 24-2 at home. L.A. will need a huge game from Kobe, Gasol and Odom to win. The Lakers have a great shot to win this game even without Bynum. Kevin Garnett is returning for the first time in a week after his bout with the flu. L.A. should take advantage of the fact that Garnett should be limited in his first game back after his illness.
USA 1, Nigeria 0
The U.S. Women's National Team got a goal just 53 seconds into the match from midfielder Lori Chalupny, then battled Nigeria through a steady rain on a sloppy pitch for the remainder of the match to record a 1-0 victory and win Group B at the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup.

The North Carolina Tar Heels have been selected as the top pick for the 2006 Atlantic Coast Conference women's soccer season as determined by a vote of the league's 11 head coaches. Carolina will go into the season minus 10 seniors from the 2005 team. But with the No. 1 ranked recruiting class in the nation arriving on campus the Tar Heels still prevailed as the No. 1 pick.
Peter Wilt is out
According to Chicago sources, Marcia McDermott has completed her boardroom takeover of the Red Stars by forcing out Peter Wilt and assuming his position in the organization.
Does not appear to be a wise move by the CRS.
1. Wilt is the man with second to none connections and experience in Chicago.
2. Wilt has a long memory and sticks around. Just ask the Fire.
3. In a league devoid of real soccer managerial experience, Wilt stood alone.
Will the CRS and the league overcome this setback? I believe this development is a major, major mistake.

Santos look to make it three in a row against Pirates
Santos will look to stop Orlando Pirates in their tracks when they clash at Athlone Stadium on Saturday. The People's team are currently sitting eighth on the league table and a win could take them to fifth spot as they have a game in hand.
However the Soweto giants have managed to move up to the table since the restart last month. They have not lost since the 10th of January when they were beaten by log leaders Supersport United.
Santos has beaten Pirates twice in their last three meeting but Captain ! Musa Otieno says those wins will not have a bearing on Saturday's game.
"Sometimes we check the records but now it is a new ball game with different players and it's a new year. It's a matter of 90 minutes, we need to work hard and see what will happen after the game."
Elezar Rogers could find himself back in team, the striker has overcome injury that has kept him out off the last few games. Rogers says he can't wait to get back on the field.
"I've seen the guys working hard and I feel left out and that is something (training) I want to be part of and I miss it. I am ready and working on it but I won't say if I am fit for the game yet because my inclusion has not been discussed."
Kick of is at 15h30.
View from the Pitlane with Brian Sims
If the F1 season continues in the way that it has so far, we're in for a fascinating "silly season" when the rumors start flying around, usually about August time, as to which driver will be moving to which team for next year. Whilst it's still early days, the temptation to consider some of the options is intriguing!
Think about it for a moment. With Button the early title favourite in his Brawn, it seems unlikely that he will want to go anywhere else, but what about his team mate for ne! xt year? What if the Ferrari doesn't improve and Massa indicates that he is looking for a more competitive drive? Could he end up as Button's new team mate? Then there's Red Bull. Vettel is a cert, unless Ferrari is tempted to go for broke and persuade the young hotshot that a Ferrari company car is not such a bad idea! Now what about team mate Webber? Is he sure of keeping his drive if Kubica decides to stop persevering with the struggling BMW team?
All in all, it could be that we are seeing the changing face of Formula 1 in more than just the new regulations.
So now the teams come back home to Europe this weekend with the Spanish GP. The Spaniards are sure to give their hero Alonso a lift and I would expect him to be right up there battling with Button, Trulli and co.
There is little doubt that Ferrari and McLaren have been working overtime to try and quell the increasing number of critics that are pointing fingers. In Ferrari'! s case, we've been seeing a return to the days when the Team w! as split into 3 strongly Italian factions. The chassis designers, the engine builders and then the team itself, with each factor blaming the other for a lack of success. Money seems not to be a problem at Maranello and I'm sure that with the proposed financial cap coming in next year, Montezemelo will be chaffing at the bit for the remainder of this year to ensure that Ferrari's massive financial advantage is put to good use.
McLaren, on the other hand, seem to be getting it together on the track quicker than Ferrari, but still have a huge PR battle to engage in if they are to retain their fan base after all of the shennanigans of late. Popularity is important to sponsors, so expect a charm offensive of Barama proportions from the affable Martin Whitmarsh, now that the ogre Denis has gone.
It's about time that William's drivers converted promise into points and Rosberg will be under pressure to perform this weekend. Under fire Piquet should go better at a circu! it he knows well, but he really is under the microscope.
I think that we may see BMW bring some better form to Barcelona and I am expecting Toyota to be as competitive as ever.
It all makes for an interesting weekend.
Raikkonen's "confession" not so obvious
Over the years I have been very appreciative of Kimi Raikkonen's skill and talent. However, I have also been rather critical. The most recent criticism I had of Raikkonen was in regards to comments that were reported last week that in an interview with MTV3 he stated, "When there are no opportunities to overtake or to improve your position it is definitely not very interesting. But that is the way it is. When you know you're fighting for just P3 you simply don't always have the same speed for the whole race as you would normally have."
However, it has been brought to my attention that these comments are not in context. Thanks to a well respected individual that goes by the name 'Chilli', I got a full translation of the article and comments made to MTV3:
Räikkönen admits: I didn't do my best
Kimi Räikkönen's F1 season ended in disappointment when the 2007 champion was only third in the final standings. McLaren's Lewis Hamilton took the champio! nship before Kimi's teammate Felipe Massa. Räikkönen admits that it was difficult to motivate himself for the final races when he couldn't drive at his fullest any more. His teammate Massa was fighting for the title until the last race. "You know it yourself, when you are driving third and can't really do anything, you are not driving the whole race at your fullest," Räikkönen admits to MTV3. "Of course, if you're fighting for position, you'll try as long as you can, as I did in last race (Brazil). Of course, if you are not really allowed to overtake or anything, that's a bit like that."
Räikkönen wants to forget this season. He is confident about the future and believes that the Italian team can make the car better next year. "Of course it's a different thing when you're in good position and driving for the championship." I think we should have a strong next season. "We'll try to improve," says Räikkönen.
Although I am a firm believer that Raikkonen w! as sorely lacking something that was not connected with his in! tegratio n with the car and tires, it is difficult to condemn his motivation armed with this version of the article. There are other factors you can look at to make judgements about Raikkonen's motivation but these recent comments probably will not support such a thesis. These sorts of comments could be made by any driver that was playing a secondary role when they are used to being the one supported and not the supporter.
In any case, we will see how Raikkonen bounces back. It is reported he will be doing a lot of the testing in preparations for 2009. For your reference:

Benitez Calm Over Dutch Duo

The Dutch duo have made the long trip to Sydney with their country for Saturday's friendly with the Socceroos.
Benitez would rather Kuyt and Babel did not have to travel, but he is confident the pair will have ample time to recover ahead of the game at Sunderland on 17th October.
"We tried to talk with the Dutch Federation about Dirk and Ryan having to travel so far but they have the! right to call the players up for these games," the Reds boss told the club's official website.
"We tried to find some kind of solution but it was impossible and it is not an ideal situation for them to travel to Australia for a friendly.
"But it is not so bad. They only have to play the one game, there is another seven days until we play Sunderland and we will see them again early next week.
"Both Dirk and Ryan know that I do not see a problem with them travelling and it is not going to be a bad situation.
"They will be back at least two or three days before the players who have gone to South America and I'm sure they will be okay for Sunderland."
The South American players to which Benitez refers are Lucas Leiva, Javier Mascherano and Emiliano Insua, who are involved with Argentina.
They are a part of Diego Maradona's squad for the must-win World Cup qualifier with Peru on Saturday, which can be seen live o! n Sky Sports 1.
Benitez said: "We know Lucas, Masch! erano an d Insua will not be back until Friday afternoon and we will have to manage them carefully."
M'Bokani Attracts Interest

The Congo international has been linked with a move to Manchester United in the past while Blackburn, Liverpool and Arsenal are all said to be monitoring his progress.
The 23-year-old has been prolific during his time at Standard with 32 goals in 62 league games but this season has seen M'Bokani struggle in front of goal.
The former Anderlecht front man admits to being unsettled in Belgium and has hinted at a January move away from Standard.
"I am not having a good start to th! e season," he told skysports.com.
"From 12 games I've only scored three goals so far. I am not happy. As for moving, why not? It depends on all parties so let's wait and see."
Match Report: Fulham 3 - 1 LiverpooL

Liverpool defenders Philipp Degen and Jamie Carragher were sent off for reckless fouls and by the end the Fulham crowd were chanting "Easy, easy" as Liverpool resembled a shambles.
Goals from Bobby Zamora, Erik Nevland and Clint Dempsey gave Roy Hodgson's side a deserved victory with Fernando Torres grabbing the one consolation for Liverpool.
But this was a match which only demonstrated that Torres cannot do it ! all by himself.
He cannot keep producing the only quality in a Liverpool team which, without the injured Steven Gerrard and Glen Johnson, looks bereft of ideas and creativity.
We had wondered what the significance was of that stirring victory over Manchester United last weekend.
Well, now it looks a one-off. A lone bright spot in a season which could get even darker next Wednesday when Liverpool travel to Lyon for a match which could see them effectively knocked out of the Champions league in the group stages.
After this result they might just be out of the Premier League race, too.
The pressure is building on Benitez. And with the Reds faithful once more booing his substitution of Yossi Benayoun the steam is hissing all around him.
Bizarrely, it was a match in which Liverpool enjoyed the majority of the possession.
A match in which they pressed forward with lots of effort, often against a wall of ! white shirts. But a match in which for vast swathes they strug! gled to supply the quality to go with their industry.
They must have wondered, however, quite how they found themselves behind after 24 minutes.
Fulham had not had a single shot on Jose Reina's goal. Let's be honest, they had barely crossed the half-way line.
But shortly after Benayoun had produced an acrobatic volley which fairly rattled the Fulham crossbar the home side broke away.
The ball came to Damien Duff on the left and that trusty left foot curled in a raking cross which bisected the Liverpool defence and allowed Zamora to tap home from close range.
A bit of a downer that, especially as Liverpool wags have been known to direct the following ditty in Zamora's direction, to the tune of 'Amore:' "When the ball hits your head and you're sat in Row Z, that's Zamora."
Well, now they know different. Zamora is lethal from six yards.
Benitez, however, must have been scratching his head, such was Liverpool's! dominance.
The problem was that while Liverpool continued to press forward they struggled to produce the high tempo and urgency they had demonstrated against Manchester United last Sunday.
And when the equaliser came they could hardly put it down to rhythm and style. Instead it was fashioned out of nothing, but by the predator supreme.
There appeared to be little danger for the Fulham defence when the ball came to Andriy Voronin. His header was weak and misdirected but it cannoned off a Fulham defender and arced into the hitting zone of Torres.
He needed no more invitation. The Spaniard simply swivelled and swung his right boot and a fabulous volley from the edge of the box fairly scorched past Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.
It was Torres' 10th league goal of the season and only demonstrated once more his value to Liverpool.
Fulham manager Roy Hodgson made a double substitution at half-time, bringing on Z! oltan Gera for Diomansy Kamara and Nevland for Duff.
It was an attempt to push Liverpool back and stem the pounding and it had some success. In fact, Fulham might have re-taken the lead on the hour mark when Zamora fired over a cross and Gera swivelled and shot but unfortunately straight at goalkeeper Reina.
The Cottagers did take the lead, however, after 74 minutes and once more it was against the run of play.
This time Paul Konchesky surged down the left hand side and Reina could only parry his cross. The ball was headed back across goal by Gera and there was Nevland to slide the ball into the net.
It got worse for Liverpool four minutes later when Swiss defender Degen was sent off for a reckless lunge on Dempsey.
Incredibly three minutes later Liverpool were down to nine men when Carragher brought down Zamora and also received a red card.
And to wrap up an afternoon to forget for Benitez, Dempsey rolled in the third for Fulham as Liverpool disintegrated.

Rodney Moto Valley closed
By Brett Lee
Rodney Moto Valley received very unfortunate news May 5 at the council meeting in West Elgin. The track, Rodney Moto Valley, is to immediately cease all operations until restructured zoning and neighbour concerns are fully addressed in regards to motocross activities.
The West Elgin councilmen complimented the Rodney Moto Valley group's presentation and passion for the sport on Thursday. Council also indicated there had been no prior complaints filed until this year, and stated their record was clean. Council said that noise, traffic, community impact and dust control were the main issues the Rodney group would have to address in the coming months. The group included CMRC's Brett Lee, Thames Valley Riders representative Jane Garrett, Rodney Moto Valley land owners Ed and Ken Roodzant and Rodney Moto Valley club executives.
"I am disappointed. We put a lot of work into the track and made ! some huge improvements this season," said Ed Roodzant. "We are going to work to get this track open again, for both races and practice. I really
enjoy all of the friends we have met through this."
"I am really upset for the whole group at Rodney. They invested in their facility, worked very hard and you could see that at the last race. It is one of the really good tracks here in Ontario," said CMRC's Lee. "I hope the community will see the positive impact the track has had on their town. The whole team at Rodney has my full support to get the facility back up and running."
If you wish to help support the Rodney Moto Valley please send a letter of support to ej_roodzant@hotmail.com.

Reds Need To Take After Brewers
Today, the Milwaukee Brewers did something that Cincinnati fans have been asking the Reds to do for a long time. The Milwaukee Brewers took ACCOUNTABILITY for their actions. The Brewers have seen their season slipping away and today made several monumental moves to their ballclub. In the process, the Brewers ate a huge amount of money and apologized to their fans for the decisions they have made and the turn the seasons is taking. In a flurry of moves, the Brewers designated for assignment Bill Hall who just three seasons ago hit 35 home runs. The also optioned to AAA Indianapolis former All-Star SS JJ Hardy and fired pitching coach Bill Castro who had been with the organization for 18 years. The Bill Hall move will cost the club 11 million dollars.
Do you ever see the Reds doing something like this? How long did we sit on the contract of players like Alex Gonzalez just because we were ignorant enough to pay them large amounts of cash? How long will we con! tinue to keep Brooke Jacoby has hitting coach and Dick Pole as pitching coach with the Cincinnati Reds continuing to finish near the bottom of the league in hitting and pitching. Today I am ashamed to say that I salute the Milwaukee Brewers.
Anyone for JJ Hardy? The Brewers still owe the Reds a player to be named later in the trade for David Weathers?
Hardy stats (26 Years old): 2007 164 Hits, 30 Doubles, 26 HR, 80 RBI, 73 Ks, .277
2008 161 Hits, 31 Doubles, 24 HR, 74 RBI, 98 Ks, .283
2009 (371 AB) 85 Hits, 14 Doubles, 11 HR, 45 RBI, 73 Ks, .229
What will we see?
The Bengals return from their Bye week to face off with division rival Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens are coming off of an emotional home victory against the previously undefeated Denver Broncos. The Bengals entered the Bye week with their best offensive performance of the season against the Bears. I still don't know where this team is. We all hope to see the offensive production that we saw against the Bears, but we all know we could see the production that we had against Denver, Cleveland, or Houston. The defense should be getting a little stronger. Safety Roy Williams has returned to the practice field and should hopefully be active for the game on Sunday. I think we need his hard hitting attitude in the secondary. There are still a lot of questions circling this team. And this is a huge game for the season if the Bengals want to make a true playoff push.

I was tempted to argue that Jermaine Dye has been more valuable to the White Sox than Hamilton to the Rangers. Dye is hitting .306 with 21 HR and 56 RBI for a team that was never even considered to be ! competitive in the AL central with the Tigers and Indians expected to duke it out. And while the Rangers are off to a 50-46 start due to a potent offense that includes Ian Kinsler, Milton Bradley, Michael Young and David Murphy, it's been Hamilton who has anchored that lineup since Opening Day. His .310 average is higher than Dye's, he has the same amount of homers (21) and his 95 RBI are the 5th most ever before the All-Star break. It's hard not too root for the guy after everything he's gone through. Could Jeff Allison find the same success for a MLB club in a couple years?
K-Rod should definitely garner some votes as his 38 saves are the most ever before the All-Star break, and clearly the reason the Angels are tied with the Cubs for best record in all of baseball. Morneau, meanwhile, leads the Twins in average, homeruns, RBI and OPS with an impressive .323/14/68/.903 line. Lurking in the pack for me is A-Rod. He's the best hitter in baseball and despite missi! ng time due to injury, sports a .312/19/53/.972 line. In June,! he hit .366 with 9 homers and 23 RBI. With Jason Giambi and Bobby Abreau hitting well around him, pitchers may have to give him something to hit more often, and that's just scary. He could definitely lead the Yankees to a wild-card berth which would certainly make for a solid argument.
Youkilis and Drew, meanwhile, are certainly worthy of discussing now but will definitely see their arguments weaken during the 2nd half. With David Ortiz poised for a July 25th return, their impact will not be as significant. For Youkilis, he'll need to avoid the 2nd half pitfalls that have haunted him thus far in his career. The guy leads the Red Sox in average (.314) and RBI (63) and is on pace for career highs in most statistical categories. Drew, meanwhile, is having an output that most baseball pundits have sought from the underachieving 5-tool player his entire career. His .302/15/55/.984 line is solid, and we all remember the ridiculous month of June he had with a .333 average, 12 b! ombs and 27 RBI. But the Sox offense is balanced throughout that production seems to come from a different guy every night. That being said, you'll be hard pressed to find a guy with a significantly higher rate of production than say, Hamilton, who has 35 more RBI than David Murphy, 2nd on the team.
Final prediction: Hamilton holds on and Disney swoops in for a movie deal.
AL Cy Young
Frontrunner: Cliff Lee, Indians
In contention: Justin Duchscherer, A's; Francisco Rodriguez, Angels
Lurking behind: Roy Halladay, Blue Jays
Fading down the stretch: Mike Mussina, Yankees; Joe Saunders, Angels
There's a reason Lee was selected to start the All-Star game, and that's because he's been the best pitcher in the AL all season long. He started the season 6-0 with seven quality starts and has allowed two runs or fewer in 13 of his 18 starts. He's tied with Joe Saund! ers for the league lead in wins with 12, sports a 2.31 ERA and! 106 str ikeouts to compliment a 1.03 WHIP, which is awesome for a starting pitcher.
The case for Rodriguez is the same here as it was for MVP. Duchscherer doesn't have the strikeouts or win total that Lee presents, but his 1.82 ERA and 0.87 WHIP might have you thinking he's still a reliever and not a converted starter. The guy has been ridiculous, allowing more than 2 earned runs in an outing only once this season, and that was a 5-2 loss to Atlanta in which he surrendered 3 earned over five innings. But I think the A's have overachieved, and with Harden gone to the Cubs, Duchscherer will be leaned upon even more. He's a former reliever, so I wonder if he'll fade down the stretch at all, but with the A's offense relatively weak, I don't think he finishes with more than 16 wins.
Halladay, meanwhile, has thrown seven complete games, two shutouts, 146.1 IP, has 11 wins, a 2.71 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 121 strikeouts. This guy is a gamer and one of my favorite pitchers i! n all of baseball because of his willingness and ability to go deep into a game every night. The Blue Jays won't make the playoffs, but Halladay is a seasoned veteran who racks up the IP total every year. He's a former Cy Young winner (2003) and I think he could sprint ahead down the final stretch and win it.
Mussina (11-6, 3.61 ERA) and Saunders (12-5, 3.07 ERA) have been solid so far, but I don't think either have enough in the tank to keep it up, nevermind win a Cy Young. Besides, come season's end, Saunders will be the 3rd or 4th best starting pitcher on that staff and his closer may have a better case than he does.
Final Prediction: Halladay remains consistent throughout the 2nd half, tossing three more complete games including another shutout to win his 2nd Cy Young.
AL Rookie of the Year
Frontrunner: David Murphy, OF, Rangers
In contention: Evan Longoria, 3B Rays; Jacoby El! lsbury, OF Red Sox
Lurking behind: Joba Chamberl! ain, SP Yankees
Everyone is obsessing over Longoria, including me; I drafted him on all three of my fantasy baseball teams this year (same with Joba). But quietly, David Murphy is putting together a similar if not better season statistically than the Rays third baseman. Murphy is hitting .276 with 13 homers and 60 RBI, is striking out at a far lower rate and has an OPS of .783. Longoria, meanwhile, has hit .275/16/53/.861, but he's a freer swinger than Murphy having struck out 17 more times in 46 fewer at bats. Murphy is hitting in a better offensive lineup so he'll probably get more opportunities to drive in runs. Ultimately, however, I think the hype train and media blitz surrounding Longoria will turn attention away from Murphy and he'll most likely fly under the radar. If he continues to produce, let's hope he at least gets some recognition.
Ellsbury has been everything the Sox could have hoped for in the leadoff spot. His line of .269/5/27 are average! at best, but his 35 stolen bases in 42 attempts and 60 runs scored bode well for his campaign. He played with success down the stretch last season, so his experience in that environment should mean he continues his production for Boston come late in the season.
Chamberlain, meanwhile, is still in the midst of a conversion from reliever to starter for the Yankees. He's 2-3 with a 2.62 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. Most impressive for me has been his ability to continue striking out hitters at a high frequency as a starter (9.9 K/9as compared to while being a reliever (11.4 K/9). His high ceiling and growing familiarity with being a starting pitcher make him my dark horse down the stretch. With seasoned veterans like Mussina and Andy Pettite on the staff, he's learning from two greats on how to be a successful starter, and I think he'll continue to develop and prosper as the year goes on. He was preseason pick for ROY, and while he's definitely not a front runner at the mome! nt, I think his ceiling is extremely high and he could make a ! great ca se come the end of the year.
Final Prediction: The hype train is just too much for Murphy, Ellsbury and Joba to overcome as Longoria finishes with 30 homeruns and claims the ROY award.
AL Manager of the Year
Frontrunner: Joe Maddon, Rays
In contention: Ron Gardenhire, Twins; Terry Francona, Red Sox
Lurking behind: Joe Girardi, Yankees; Jim Leyland, Tigers
Fading down the stretch: Ozzie Guillen, White Sox; Ron Washington, Rangers
What the Rays have done over the first half of the season has been nothing short of amazing and spectacular. Despite the fact that the team has lost seven straight, it's still only a half game behind the Red Sox. With a nice mix of youth and veterans in the clubhouse, the Rays could certainly be right in it till the end. Many thought they'd continue to improve this season, and perhaps finish 3rd or 4th in the ever competitiv! e AL East, but no one ever expected this. Joe Maddon deserves a lot of credit for what he's done, and if he can right the ship after the All-Star break, this team could be tough to put away.
Gardenhire, meanwhile, is another manager who has defied the odds; but then again, that's the Twins seem to do every year. Just when people write them off, they rise and put together a solid campaign. That's exactly what the team is doing in 2008, fresh off the trade of Johan Santana, continued struggles of Francisco Liriano, and an offense that lost Torii Hunter in the off-season. Young pitching, a top notch closer and a timely offense have this team in the thick of the AL Central race.
Francona should probably be up here every year. The guy deals with the toughest market in the country and his squad has been riddled with injuries over the course of the season. Yet he's managed to regain the AL East lead with a mix of veteran leadership and youth. Putting Drew in ! the 3-hole during Ortiz's absence was brilliant. And the bullp! en has b een awful, but Francona has mixed and matched different combinations to make up for less than mediocre talent. Winning two World Series championships in four years is quite an accomplishment, and he's poised for another.
I think Guillen and Washington have both done a terrific job in leading their teams this first half, as well. The White Sox are atop the AL Central and the Rangers are over .500 and playing competitively. However, I don't think either team will make the playoffs and both will fade in the 2nd half, thus diminishing any chance of post-season honors for these two men. Both teams will suffer from a lack of consistent starting pitching, and the Rangers don't have a bona fide closer; CJ Wilson is one of those guys that exemplifies why the save statistic can be overrated.
My sleepers for the 2nd half are Girardi and Leyland because both managers saw their ball clubs get off to horrible starts. Yet both have seem their teams rebound nicely in J! une and July and I think they'll continue to do the same the rest of the way. The Yankees offense has been torrid of late, and with Chamberlain solidifying that rotation and Rivera at the back end, look for this team to contend for the wild card spot. I'll be even more convinced if the Yankees snatch up a Brian Fuentes type reliever to add to the bullpen. The Tigers, meanwhile, are much like the Yankees in that it's a team with a scary offense. The starting pitching was awful to start the season, but Verlander has turned it around and Kenny Rogers has been surprisingly effective. Although Bonderman is done for the season, Armando Galarraga has been a nice addition. This team will need Fernando Rodney and Joel Zumaya to stay healthy and be the lights out, 1-2 tandem they were expected to be. Todd Jones sucks, but chances are he'll be protecting a lot of 3-run leads anyway.
Final prediction: The Rays will rebound from the 7-game slide and stay in the mix until ! the bitter end. Maddon wins a fairly competitive vote over Gar! denhire.
NL MVP
Frontrunner: Hanley Ramirez, SS Marlins
In contention: Chase Utley, 2B Phillies; Albert Pujols, 1B Cardinals
Lurking behind: Pat Burrell, OF Phillies; David Wright, 3B Mets
Fading down the stretch: Lance Burkman, 1B Astros; Chipper Jones, 3B Braves
The Marlins are 50-45 and only 1.5 games behind the Phillies for 1st in the NL East despite clearing the payroll during a fire sale last offseason. There are many nice stories in that Marlins clubhouse, including Dan Uggla, Jorge Cantu and Ricky Nolasco, but Ramirez is the guy that makes this offense so dynamic. His line of .311/23/45 is stunning from a leadoff hitter and he's most likely going to finish with a 40/40 season. And amazingly, A-Rod is making more than the entire Marlins roster this season. Keefe reminded me of this earlier then said, "That kills me." It kills me too.
While everyone has b! een clamoring for Utley to make it three Phillies' players in the last three seasons, I'm just not convinced Utley has MVP credibility. He's putting together a nice season hitting .291 with 25 homeruns and 69 RBI, but he's only hitting .261 over the last two and half months and his power has dropped significantly. He hits in the middle of a potent lineup, but with Pat Burrell and Ryan Howard producing as much, if not more, I think Utley's resume takes a bit of a hit.
Pujols garners extra attention because of the Cardinals surprising first half coupled with the fact that Albert is producing at a .350/18/50 clip. He's arguably the best hitter in the game and his presence in the middle of that lineup has always made it dangerous. But with the emergence of power threats Rick Ankiel and Ryan Ludwick and the offseason trade for Troy Glaus, Pujols is only 3rd on the team in homeruns and tied for third in RBI. If St. Louis makes the postseason as a wildcard, not only wil! l Tony Larussa be a favorite for manager of the year, but Pujo! ls shoul d be in the discussion as long as his production doesn't drop, which it shouldn't. If not, he'll just chalk it up as another great season.
Players to watch are Pat Burrell and David Wright. Both are putting together solid 2008 campaign. Burrell, an All-Star snug in my opinion, is in the midst of a contract year, and while his .275 average is rather pedestrian, his 23 homers and 57 RBI are exceptional. I think he'll turn it on after the All-Star break, but hitting behind Utley and Howard, he'll continue to do it rather quietly. If either of those guys start to falter and Burrell continues to produce, a Phillies' playoff berth may justify his consideration. Wright, meanwhile, is boasting a .282/17/70 line thus far. Unlike last year, the Mets will be playing from behind this 2nd half, and if the team makes a run, it will most likely be because of Wright in the middle of that lineup. With the firing of Willie Randolph and mediocre play to start the season, capturing a! playoff berth would be substantial. I think Wright could be a dark horse if that happens.
Final prediction: The Mets make the playoffs thanks to a huge 2nd half from Wright, thus awarding him the MVP.
NL Cy Young
Frontrunner: Tim Lincecum, Giants
In contention: Edinson Volquez, Reds
Lurking behind: Johan Santana, Mets; Dan Haren, Diamondbacks; Brandon Webb, Diamondbacks
Fading down the stretch: Ben Sheets, Brewers; Carlos Zambrano, Cubs
Lincecum and Volquez have been out of this world, and at this point, it's hard to believe that either guy will slow down, barring injury. This could very well be a two horse race to the finish with a cluster of guys not far behind in the second pack. Their stats are more or less comparable, their WHIP exactly the same. Lincecum has one less win, but one less loss. Volquez has a slightly lower ERA, but less innings ! pitched, thus less strikeouts. Both guys play on bad teams, ne! ither of which will make the playoffs.
The National League is loaded with great pitchers, any of whom could probably make a case for Cy Young at the end of the season. If Dan Haren, Brandon Webb or Santana pitch their respective teams into the playoffs, there may be a case there. But I think along with Zambrano, Hamels and even a guy like Ricky Nolasco, it'll just be a bunch of terrific seasons that were outdone by two other guys. The fact that Sheets and Zambrano have Sabathia and Harden, respectively, joining them at the top of the rotation makes them less attractive options to me in terms of standing out.
It'll be hard to determine until the very end, but unless one of those guys in the second tier of pitchers runs the table and single handedly leads his team to the playoffs, I think it'll be either Lincecum or Volquez.
Final prediction: Volquez is in the tougher division and Lincecum benefits from the lowly NL West to win the Cy Young.
NL Rookie of the Year
Frontrunner: Geovany Soto, C Cubs
In contention: Kosuke Fukudome, OF Cubs
Lurking behind: Jair Jurrjens, P Braves
Fading down the stretch: Jay Bruce, OF Reds; Joey Votto, 1B Reds
The cast of characters isn't as impressive to me as the AL group of newbies. Soto seems to be the leading guy right now, as he leads in every major statistical offensive category except OBP, an honor which goes to Cubs teammate Fukudome. Bruce was the big story when he first arrived in Cincinnati, and teammate Votto got off to a nice start as well. Votto's longer tenure is most likely the reason he sits at 13 homers and 40 RBI compared to Bruce's 6 and 21. But neither has done much of anything the last two months, and the honeymoon seems to be over.
My preseason pick was Fukudome, but he's hit a snag over the last few weeks particularly, then dropping his st! ock. I think he'll rebound nicely and finish around .290 with ! 15 homer s and 65-70 RBI, but Soto already has 16 bombs and 56 RBI. Unless Soto goes 0 for the world over the next month or so, which I don't expect to happen, I think he'll continue his steady play and take the prize.
The interesting guy to watch is Jurrjens over in Atlanta. Pitchers aren't usually the popular pick for ROY awards, which is why my Joba pick likely won't pan out. He's 9-4 with a 3.00 ERA and 10 quality starts in 16 appearances. With John Smoltz and Tom Glavine on the shelf due to injury and the return of Mike Hampton still on hold, he's been terrific all season and quite a surprise staple in that rotation. Don't sleep on him.
Final prediction: Soto wins NL ROY.
NL Manager of the Year
Frontrunner: Fredi Gonzalez, Marlins
In contention: Charlie Manuel, Phillies
Lurking behind: Jerry Manuel, Mets;
Fading down the stretch: Tony LaRussa, Cardinals; Joe! Torre, Dodgers
What Gonzalez and the Marlins have done so far this year is remarkable, sitting only 1.5 games behind the Phillies in the tight NL East race. If his team can finish with 80+ wins, I think he deserves it regardless of where the Marlins finish in the standings. Even if they go sub 80 in wins, he should still get a ton of consideration. This team was a joke heading into the season, yet I don't think there's anyone that wants to face them. He seems to be pulling all the right strings, and there's a lot of young talent in that lineup and rotation that could see them legitimately contending in a year or two before another fire sale.
Manuel has done a great job with that Phillies team, and if he gets some reinforcements in his pitching staff, it'll be a formidable contender heading down the stretch. Do I think he can win it? Sure. Do I think he will? No. But if the Phillies win the NL East, he'll be in the conversation, especially if they! pull away.
Jerry Manuel has won nine straight and ! the Mets are right back in it. I'm not sure how managers who take over mid-season fare in the topic of conversation, but I think he's the dark horse here. Especially if David Wright takes over and leads the Mets to the postseason, which was my prediction in the NL MVP discussion.
Joe Torre was my preseason pick, and while the Dodgers could very well win the NL West, the division sucks. I could probably manage Chico's Bail Bonds to the division title and I still wouldn't be up for consideration. It's a lose/lose over there. If you win, it's not impressive because the level of play has been so poor. And if you lose, you start to wonder if your team should be exiled to the Pacific Coast League.
Keefe made a valid argument saying that if either the Cubs or Brewers finish with the best record, then Lou Pinella and Ned Yost will be discussed. I agree, but to me these other guys warrant more consideration.
Final Prediction: Gonzalez and the Marlins fini! sh at .500 and he takes the award for his troubles.

What are we buying: A boxing match or a used car?
I came across this commercial last night for the upcoming "boxing match" between Tim Sylvia and Ray Mercer. To give you some background on how hideous an idea this match is, it was actually declined sanctioning by the New Jersey State Athletic Commission. It was originally supposed to take place in Atlantic City, but they wanted no part of it, and for good reason. Check out the commercial, it's awful. I can't tell if they're selling a boxing match or a used car here. You gotta love watching Sylvia hitting the mitts and nearly whiffing on the last one, while "Merciless" pecks away at the heavy bag like a malnourished woodpecker. Not to mention their speaking parts, which really brought it all together. Sylvia might be the biggest geek on the planet, both literally and figuratively.
What's more awkward, Sylvia in this promo, or his appearance on Blind Date?
And tell me the voiceover doesn't sound like something out of a monster truck commercial. SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY!!!
A free can of Natty Light. Mmmm. BE HERE OR BE QUEER!!!

BJal's Lock du Jour - Thursday, October 22
I'm not sure what's more pathetic, BJal betting on the UTEP game, or BJal winning the UTEP game. Either way, he's still a loser in my book, and his record supports that sentiment. But tonight, he looks to make it two in a row! He's going with Florida State, on the road, giving up 2.5 against UNC. I don't like it. Any team that loses to Boston College this year loses my respect. Which is why I'll be watching this weekend's game with Notre Dame closely, because I do not want to lose respect for my Irish squad. I LOVE this team, and I'll be bitter and pissed off if they lose to a garbage team like the Eagles. But Florida State lost to them, and BJal is betting on the Seminoles. Good luck with allllllll that.
BJal's Lock du Jour: Florida State (-2.5) over UNC
Overall record: 5-9

Eredivisie Saturday Review

A first-half blitz gave leaders PSV Eindhoven a comfortable win over Willem II at the Philips Stadion.
Excellent strikes from Otman Bakkal and Ibrahim Afellay sandwiched an Arjan Swinkels own goal as the hosts raced into a 3-0 lead.
They could not add to their tally in the second half and Willem II pulled one back through Frank Demouge four minutes from time.
FC Twente recovered from conceding an early goal to keep pace with PSV by beating VVV-Venlo.
! VVV stunned the hosts when Achmed Ahahaoui scored after just three minutes, but FC Twente quickly turned the match back in their favour with strikes by Bryan Ruiz and Douglas putting them in front by the 24th minute.
Ronald Koeman's troubles at AZ Alkmaar continued as the defending champions slipped to a fourth defeat of the season.
Sander Keller's 14th-minute goal gave FC Utrecht a fifth win in seven matches and maintained their place among the early pacesetters.
RKC Waalwijk earned their first win of the season in emphatic fashion as they came from behind to thrash Roda JC.
Having failed to score at home before today, RKC made up for lost time as they replied to Willem Janssen's opener with goals from Fouad Idabdelhay, Charlison Benshop, Derk Boerrigter and Fred Benson.
Troicki defeats Tsonga

Serbia's Viktor Troicki upset Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semi-finals of the Thailand Open in Bangkok.
Troicki, seeded fourth in the tournament, looked to be on his way out when Tsonga triumphed 6-1 in the first, but battled back to take the match 1-6 6-3 6-2 in one hour and 38 minutes.
The world number 32 will take on another Frenchman, Gilles Simon, in the final.
Second seed Simon got past Austria's Jurgen Melzer in his semi-final 6-4 7-6 (7-3).
Inter Milan 2-2 Dynamo Kiev

Inter Milan twice came from behind to earn a draw with Dynamo Kiev in an entertaining Champions League clash at the San Siro.
Taras Mykhalyk put Dynamo in front and after Dejan Stankovic had equalised, Ferreira Lucio headed into his own net to give the visitors a 2-1 half-time lead.
Walter Samuel equalised less than two minutes into the second half but neither side was able to find a winner despite a number of chances.
The visitors took a shock lead after ju! st four minutes courtesy of a superb opportunist finish from Mykhalyk.
Junior Gerson Magrao's woeful free-kick should have been cleared by any of the three Inter players on the edge of the area, but somehow found its way through to Mykhalyk and he swept the ball into the bottom corner off the post.
Inter were struggling to get anything going in attack and Wesley Sneijder's abysmal free-kick summed up their early efforts.
Samuel Eto'o then felt he should have had a penalty when he collided with Yevhen Khacheridi as he ran into the area but referee Martin Atkinson was unmoved.
Dejan Stankovic then flashed a shot wide before becoming the first player booked for a foul on Magrao, but it was Dynamo who really should have got on the scoresheet again on 25 minutes.
Roman Eremenko produced a superb cross and Andriy Shevchenko climbed highest between two Inter defenders only to steer his header inches wide of the post.
It took until the 30th! minute for Inter to force visiting goalkeeper Stanislav Bogus! h into a genuine save, Dynamo failing to clear a free-kick and Stankovic connecting with a stinging half-volley which Bogush gratefully parried clear at his near post.
Stankovic would not be denied for long however, the home side getting back on level terms in the 35th minute with a rapid counterattack.
Sneijder and Ferreira Lucio combined to free Stankovic and his task was made considerably easier as Bogush charged out of the area, leaving Stankovic to flick the ball into an empty net with the outside of his right foot.
However, Dynamo took the lead again just five minutes later when Lucio inexplicably headed into his own net from Magrao's corner.
Whatever manager Jose Mourinho said at half-time had the desired effect and Inter equalised again less than two minutes into the second half.
Sneijder's outswinging corner was met by Walter Samuel and superbly headed into the far corner from a difficult angle.
The game had really opened up as both! sides were not happy to settle for a draw, Eto'o forcing a good save from Bogush and Julio Cesar needing to scamper quickly from his line moments later at the other end to snuff out a Dynamo attack.
Shevchenko's free-kick was comfortably saved by Cesar at his near post before Eto'o dithered too long on the edge of the area, only to scuff a weak shot straight at Bogush.
The best chance of a winner fell to Inter substitute David Suazo, who was found five yards from goal by Javier Zanetti's brilliant cutback, only to somehow miss the target when it looked easier to score.
Suazo did have the ball in the net in injury time but was correctly ruled offside.
Qatar League Saturday Review

Defending champions Al Gharafa were held to a 3-3 draw by Qatar SC in the fifth round of the Qatar League.
Qatar SC took the lead after only ten minutes through Qatar striker Sebastian Soria before Iraqi midfielder Qusai Munir made it 2-0 with a powerful shot from distance four minutes later.
However, Al Gharafa pulled a goal back through Younis Mahmoud after 33 minutes before they levelled in the fifth minute of stoppage time at the end of the first half through B! razilian midfielder Juninho with a powerful shot.
Al Gharafa took the lead for the first time on the night in the 55th minute with a powerful header from Belal Mohamad, but Qatar SC equalised after 73 minutes through Yousef Ahmed.
Al Gharafa remained in second place in the standing on 11 points, just one ahead of third-placed Qatar SC.
Al Sadd strengthened their position at the top of the table thanks to a 3-1 win over Al Wakra.
After a scoreless first half, Al Wakra took a surprise lead four minutes after the break when Moroccan striker Adil Ramzi beat two defenders before scoring easily.
Al Sadd levelled after 55 minutes through Taher Zakaria and they should have taken the lead eight minutes later, but Afonso Alves' shot hit the crossbar.
The former Middlesbrough man was denied again by the woodwork five minutes later.
However, Alves did score after 73 minutes and Abdulrab Al Yazidi made it 3-1 in the second minute of stopp! age time before missing a penalty two minutes later.
Bolton Wanderers 0 Chelsea 4

The Premier League game between Bolton Wanderers and Chelsea at the Reebok Stadium on Saturday Oct 31 2009.
Just about doing enough on a regular basis and still scoring four goals is what wins titles and that is exactly what Chelsea did against Bolton to maintain their advantage at the top of the Premier League.
There was none of the free-flowing football that allowed them to score 13 goals in their previous three matches but they withstood a f! erocious first-half onslaught from Bolton Wanderers and took their chance when it came along.
As Jlloyd Samuel trudged off after clipping Didier Drogba in the area to concede a penalty that was confidently converted by Frank Lampard just before the interval, there was only a sense of frustration that it had taken such an incident to open up the hosts.
To the lazy or untrained eye, the diamond formation used by Bolton to combat Chelsea might have looked more like a lump of coal but it certainly did the job as Gary Megson's side enjoyed an exciting and open first half.
Chelsea stood up to the early set-piece tests but took their time to find openings at the other end before Drogba fed Nicolas Anelka and the Frenchman's drive was tipped wide by Jussi Jaaskelainen, who diverted Drogba's header fr! om the corner that followed over the bar.
With Fabri! ce Muamb a roaming to good effect, Johan Elamander and Kevin Davies were causing the visitors' defence plenty of trouble. Davies should have at least hit the target after collecting an Elmander flick but his drive flew wide of Petr Cech's post.
But just before half time a neat move sliced the hosts open and Michael Ballack slipped through for Drogba to break into the area only to be tripped by Samuel as he prepared to shoot, giving Lampard the chance to open the scoring from the spot.
There was still some Bolton resistance after the restart but Chelsea oozed ruthlessness and it was no surprise when Drogba broke clear and squared for Deco to curl past Jaaskelainen to make it two.
A third came when Zat Knight headed Ricardo Caravalho's cross into his own goal under heavy pressure from Branislav Ivanovic before Drogba fired in from Lampard's flick to make it four.
It was a win that lacked glamour maybe but another three ! points all the same to make it 14 wins from 16 for the campaign and 17 goals from four games.Friday, December 11, 2009
How to Practice Self Defense
by Jimmy Cox
The word Ketsugo means combination. In essence it is a combination of the best and most effective self defense moves from the greatest methods of hand-to-hand combat ever devised.
Training and Condition
As Ketsugo is a physical art, training and condition are most essential. In considering your diet, it is wise to eat well, eat an abundance of high protein foods, stay away from an excess of sugar, starches and fats, drink plenty of liquids, avoid intemperate drinks and remember that your body needs the proper amount and types of vitamins. The proper diet is certainly the first step toward good conditioning.
In Ketsugo, it is not the muscular strength that is important, but the speed and accuracy with which a movement is performed that spells the difference between the success and failure of a defense. You can improve your speed and perfect your coordination with some simple techniques. Study these techniques and you wi! ll greatly increase your effectiveness in Ketsugo.
Suspend a rubber ball from the ceiling or door frame. This can be done by making a hole in the ball with a knife or ice pick, forcing a piece of string through it, and tying a knot at the end of the string so the ball will not slip off. Practice hitting the ball with light blows using both hands.
Then, practice hitting the ball while it is moving, remembering that accuracy and speed should be your only considerations - not power. In a similar manner, practice kicking the ball while it is moving, alternating your feet. Again, practice for speed and accuracy.
Jumping rope is, oddly enough, one of the best ways of improving your speed and coordination. Try this until you can jump without hitting the rope with your feet, continually trying to increase the speed of your jump and movement of the rope.
Glue a rubber sponge to the end of a stick. With your partner, practice blocking blows! from the stick, having your partner increase his attack as yo! ur abili ty improves. Practice kicking and slashing, using force and speed as you progress. An integral part of conditioning for Ketsugo are the warming-up exercises that should be done before each practice.
For a trunk-twisting exercise, twist your body as far as you can in circular motions in both directions, without moving the feet.
To loosen your joints, relax your muscles while shaking your wrists and ankles. Another good exercise for warming-up is called rabbit-hopping. As the name implies you hop up and forward like a rabbit. Increase your distance every day until you can hop and jump for a distance of 100 feet.
Another important part of conditioning is proper breathing. If you are an average person, you are probably not breathing correctly right now. Most of us take breathing for granted. However, it is important to note that correct breathing is an aid to the more active muscular coordination necessary for lightning defense.
In ord! er to obtain maximum physical and psychological strength at a critical moment when a gasp for breath could put you at a terrific disadvantage, practice the breathing exercise. Stand erect and inhale very slowly. Then hold your breath for as long as you can without straining or becoming uncomfortable. Finally, exhale in a rapid, forceful style through the mouth so that the air gushes out. Repeat this exercise every day, holding your breath a little longer each time.
So far we have dealt only with the physical training and conditioning of your body. Now let us deal briefly with your mental well being. Since Ketsugo involves a direct encounter between two or more human beings, the psychological factors brought into play are very important. It is important to remember to be as calm as the surface of still water when facing an attacker.
If you are upset, you may miss the one weakness that may exist in an adversary's movement. When you are attacked, never fo! rget the finality of the enemy's move. Watch carefully for an ! opening and apply the proper techniques.
Remember these principles and you will be well on your way to defending yourself.
