NFL Preview '08: AFC South Tightens Up

AFC South Standings
1. Indianapolis Colts 11-5- AFC South Champion
2. Jacksonville Jaguars 11-5- Wildcard Winner
3. Houston Texans 9-7
4. Tennessee Titans 9-7

The AFC South is the best division in football. The Colts and Jags are Super Bowl contenders, while the Texans and Titans are playoff contenders. Peyton Manning is still in Indy with Reggie Wayne, Marvin Harrison, and head coach Tony Dungy. The Colts are about the same, besides age and looked poised for a deep playoff run. The division is so close because the other three teams continue to improve. Jacksonville is always under the radar and continues to get better and better. Head coach Jack Del Rio has built a top 5 defense and David Garrard leads a continually improving offense. Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor are still running the ball very well. The Jags will challenge the Colts for the AFC South crown, but Indy is still a little better. Houston and Tennessee will be around th! e 8-10 win mark. If Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson stay healthy for Houston, they have a top offense in the AFC. Their defense continues to get better and the O-line is solid. Houston could very well make the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. The Titans are always a solid team under head coach Jeff Fisher. Vince Young has had his issues at QB, but always seems to find a way to win. He has some new weapons on offense this season including TE Alge Crumpler. Look for Young to have his best season yet. The defense is very talented and should scare opposing teams. Tennessee could easily make the postseason as well, but like Houston will have trouble within this tough division. This is the strongest and deepest division and will be the most interesting to watch this season. Next up, we finish off the AFC with the West division. Will the Chargers make a run at perfection and take the AFC West title? Or can the much improved Raiders make a run? Find out in! Part 4 0f 9 in the next few days.
